You have more authority than you think. You're just not stacking it.

Most people position themselves with one credential: MBA, 10 years in marketing, ex-Google.

That's fine. It's also copyable. There are 50,000 other ex-Google employees. Your credential doesn't create separation.

Authority stacking combines things that don't usually go together. And when you combine experiences that seem unrelated, you create positioning competitors can't touch.

Because they can't copy your exact path. They'd have to live your entire career backwards.

The Authority Stack Formula

Your positioning = X + Y (where X and Y don't usually combine)

Examples:

  • Poker player + ER radiologist = high-stakes pattern recognition expert

  • Military + meditation teacher = mental toughness coach for founders

  • Investment banker + fitness coach = wealth + health optimization

  • Engineer + copywriter = technical product storytelling

The combinations create categories that didn't exist before. And categories you invent are categories you own.

How to Stack Your Authority

Step 1: List everything you've done (even the "irrelevant" stuff)

Don't filter yet. Write it all:

  • Jobs you've had

  • Industries you've worked in

  • Skills you picked up

  • Weird hobbies or side interests

  • Failed projects

  • Certifications you forgot about

Most people position with their most recent role. That's leaving money on the table.

Step 2: Find the unusual combinations

Look for experiences that create contrast:

  • Corporate + entrepreneurial

  • Technical + creative

  • High-pressure + teaching

  • Analytical + people skills

The more unexpected the combination, the stronger your positioning.

Step 3: Test if the combination solves a real problem

Bad stack: "I'm a baker and a lawyer" (doesn't solve anything)
Good stack: "I help food businesses navigate FDA compliance" (baker knowledge + legal expertise = specific solution)

Your stack must create value, not just sound interesting.

Step 4: Name your position using the stack

Don't say: "I'm a consultant with a background in finance and tech"
Say: "I help SaaS companies fix revenue architecture" (finance + tech = owned category)

The combination becomes your positioning moat.

Why This Makes You Uncopyable

Single credentials can be matched. Stacked experience can't.

Someone can get your MBA. They can't get your MBA + military service + 5 years in poker.

Real examples:

  • Naval Ravikant: Philosophy + startup investing + coding = unique voice on wealth/happiness

  • Tim Ferriss: Bodybuilding + Japanese + startups + writing = 4-Hour frameworks

  • This newsletter: Nuclear inspection + ER medicine + poker + government AI = high-stakes human skills

None of those combinations can be copied. They're structural advantages, not learned skills.
